Blazblue
Since the release of God of War 3 nothing has been able to match it terms of sheer fun factor. Since it was released I’ve bought numerous games amongst them Yakuza 3 and GTA Episodes (Ballad of Gay Tony, and Lost and the Damned). While both of these were solid games they just didn’t hold my interest at all. Blazblue on the other hand has that “just one more go” factor to its gameplay. It’s a 2d beat em up I first heard about the game a few months ago after several friends and online sites talked about the import version, it wasn’t until a recent trip to HMV however, that I got to sample the game for myself. What first struck me were the graphics, beautiful crisp sprites and detailed 3d backgrounds really make this something special to watch (think of a High – def Third strike and you’ll have some idea). It also has some gorgeous animated sequences and the whole game is just full of lovely detailed little touches. Anyway after a few games with a random Spanish student in HMV I was hooked and promptly traded in GTA and Yakuza for a copy. It’s a tough game but it’s worth the investment of time to really become good at it and like God of War you feel great after defeating a boss that’s held you back previously. As beat- em- ups go it’s up there with Third Strike and Soul Calibur 2.
Skate 3 demo
I’ve also been playing the demo of the upcoming Skate 3 which has proven to be really enjoyable. Ever since the days of Tony Hawk Pro Skater on the original Playstation I’ve always enjoyed skate boarding games and the skate franchise is now the best of the lot now that the Hawk games seem to have abandoned the core ideals of the original games. Skate offers a fresh take on the genre and a truly innovative way of controlling your board (basically you use the analogue stick to control tricks, push down and then flick up to perform an olly etc) it really is great fun and the demo alone has provided hours of entertainment. The only downside is the soundtrack which really is poor for a skate game and doesn’t really suit at all. Other than that its quality.
Interestingly the game features "Jason Lee" from "My name is Earl" fame apparently he used to be a pro skater and acts as the tutorial narrator in this.
